"What If?"
The Saban/Lion's Gate MMPR Movie
As you may already know, a new Power Rangers movie in in production between Saban and Lion's Gate. This movie is, by all current reports, based on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers characters, the characters and concepts that comprised the first three seasons of the Power Rangers television series. Early reports implied that the new movie would not be a reboot, or at least not in a way that ignores the 20+ years of the TV series' continuity (a continuity which does have its fair share of inconsistencies and plot holes).
Not only would I love to see the new movies as an official alternate timeline, I would like things to go a step further. The current season of Power Rangers, Dino Charge, will continue next year with a new title, Dino Supercharge, and this series will end in the fall of 2016. The new MMPR movie has a release date of January 2017, which gives Dino Supercharge the perfect placement to not only segue into the new MMPR movie and the creation of the new alternate timeline (thus keeping the entire franchise's history not only in one piece, but making the creation of the new universe dependent on the original timeline) but to wrap up the franchise's original continuity to make way for the new timeline.
This would mean going forward, each new season of Power Rangers would now take place in this new alternate timeline, one very much built upon and tied in with the new movie. This would also allow for new, tighter, reigns on continuity (not in a restrictive sense, but more a chance to keep from creating the same types of glaring plot holes the current continuity suffers from).
It is with this concept in mind that the following "What If?" scenario plays out. Yes, these posts are, basically, just fan fiction (or even a fan proposal for the movie, if you will), but ultimately they serve as an idea of the sort of thing I'd like to see in the upcoming movie.
Let's begin.
Saban's Power Rangers - The Movie
Rita Repulsa, by Kiarou |
We fade in on a scene set roughly ten thousand years ago, near the dawn of human civilization's great expansion, a strange visitor had been living among mankind for a number of years. Upon his arrival, the mighty mystic known only as Zordon began helping those around him, leading towards advances in medicine and agriculture. However, advancing mankind is not the only reason for Zordon's arrival, he came with great power to prepare the Earth for a threat he knew would one day come.
Year pass, and suddenly the sky above Zordon's tent erupts in a vortex of light. A shuttle pod shoots out of the wormhole, trailing fire and smoke from its damaged engines. The wormhole closes and the shuttle crashes. People gather around the smoking crater, unsure of what to do. Zordon approaches, descends the impact crater, and opens the craft. His pupil, Gosei, lies inside unconscious. Zordon brings him around, Gosei comes to just long enough to gasp, "She's coming," before passing out.
Time passes, we see Zordon and Gosei working on a robot body, which appears to be nearly complete, in an unknown location that is very much out of place for the time. Surrounded by computers and other high tech gadgets, we get the first glimpse of a set of Ranger suits, out of focus in tubes lining the tech chamber. Suddenly alarms sound, monitors flare to life as the threat Zordon has been preparing for has arrived.
Rita Repulsa had appeared in Earth orbit and would be arriving directly above them very soon.
Zordon commands Gosei to put the finishing touches on their robotic knight while he jumps into actions. With a touch of a his bracelet, Zordon teleports out of the chamber to the surface of the Earth. He touches his bracelet again and six teleport beams of varying colors teleport to the scene. As the energy around the new arrivals fade, we see six middle-aged adults, three men and three women. They gather around Zordon as he advises them of the situation.
Suddenly the sky grows dark as Rita's palace-ship flies in from space, coming to rest hundreds of feet above the ground. We see Rita for the first time as she steps out on her balcony, raises her staff, and unleashes a powerful blast of energy towards the gathered heroes. They scatter, avoiding the blast, however, the blast strikes the ground and breaches through the Earth and strikes Zordon's chamber where Gosei and the incomplete Robo Knight appear to be destroyed.
Rita then sends out a wave of winged beasts as the Ancient Rangers regroup, and along with Zordon, and then morph. We see the Red, Blue, Pink, Yellow, Black and Green Rangers, along with Zordon as the White Ranger, in suits that appear to be an aesthetic combination of the MMPR suits and the Gorenger suits. As the Rangers leap into action to fight the hordes of Rita we cut to the title screen.

We fade back in, this time on Modern times in the city of Angel Grove, more specifically, Angel Grove High School. Here we see the current Rangers for the first time, getting the first glimpse of some of their personalities. Jason is practicing martial arts in the gym, Trini is in the library doing research, Zack is in the middle of a dance class, Billy is in a robotics class working on a project, Kimberly is in another part of the gym practicing gymnastics, and arriving to the school for the first time are twin brother Thomas and Robert Oliver. We then go about the school day, seeing the future-rangers as they were, and who they are. We also see they are, despite their flaws, ultimately a group of good kids who are all friends despite the clique-lines that might try to separate them. They also show the new students a warm welcome. All around these are good eggs.
Also, throughout the day we learn (via flashes from various devices being used by random students and teachers) of a developing news story regarding a crew of astronauts that have safely landed on Mars, and have begun an exploratory mission following the detection of a mysterious energy signature.
Int - Command Center
The Command Center is darkened and powered down. Suddenly it becomes active as a proximity alert sounds. A large tube fills with energy and the floating head of Zordon phases into existence. A panel on a wall opens and a human-sized robot emerges. Speaking to the robot, a droid from the Alpha series (this particular model being Alpha-6), the communications array is soon brought online, the viewing globe showing the astronauts on Mars. It appears the astronauts are using a handheld device to track the mysterious energy signal to its source.
Fearing another escape by Rita is imminent, Zordon has Alpha-6 initiate the Ranger candidate protocol, searching for those best suited to wield the power of the Rangers.
Among other students as well, the would-be-Rangers eat lunch, continuing to make friends with the new students. Of the twins, Robbie is the friendlier of the two. While not behaving as a loner, Tommy is still a bit distant while with the others. Suddenly a flash of light pulses in the sky, a wave of energy pulses to the ground, scanning everyone in its path. During the ensuing panic, in the distant, and flash of light, then a downward energy pulse can be seen over and over again. The search for a new team of Rangers has begun.
Ext - Mars
The exploratory team is fighting a sandstorm as they approach the source of the signal, a sandstorm which seems unnatural and sudden, as if trying to keep them away. They push on. Upon reaching the target, the sandstorm continues but they see nothing else. Suddenly the ground beneath them gives way and they fall into a large cavern. Lining the walls of the cavern are what appear to be high tech lights of various colors. At the center of the cavern is a large clock-work jar, it appears to be sealed. The astronauts begin scanning the jar, eventually one of them touches it.
A surge of energy strikes the astronaut, sending them flying back and smashing into the cavern wall. In the process, inadvertently, the knocked back astronaut cracked one of the lights in the cavern. Once the light was cracked a small whisp of smoke creeps out from the seal around the lid on the jar, snaking its way around the cavern until it reaches an astronaut. From there it seemed to have no problem getting through the explorer's sealed suit and entering the astronaut's body via the nose. The astronaut's eyes turned a solid white as they begin to smash all of the lights surrounding the jar.
With the last light smashed, the clock-work on the jar begins to turn, the lid slowly rising. The lid barely raised, but it was enough. a wave of energy was released as large amounts of mist began to roll out of the jar. The mist coalesced into Rita Repulsa, who was now once again free. Knowing she would need new minion, she used her crescent staff to zap the two astronauts, transforming them into creatures of evil, infusing them with the essence of two of her old lackies, though still with traces of humanity in their personality. Once again with a Squatt and Baboo in her service, Rita teleported the three of them to Earth's moon.
Cut to - Angel Grove
A few hours have passed since Zordon's scan began, and like most of the planet, the city of Angel Grove was in a panic trying to determine what the light pulses, and subsequent energy waves, were, who or what caused them, and what they'd done, if anything, to the populace. Some, even with this ongoing panic, begin to wonder if it is somehow connected to the loss of contact with the astronauts on Mars, which happened at roughly the same time.
We see the would-be Rangers have all returned to their homes, dealing with the day's stress in their own ways. Some are outside, some inside, when the sky goes dark for no observable reason. Then, across the world and in every language, we see an image of Rita over every city on Earth, as she declares herself the new ruler of the planet... and resistance will not be tolerated.
Alpha-6 is in a panic when suddenly the results of the scan are in. The first of the Ranger candidates have been found. At Zordon's command, Alpha-6 activates the teleportation sequence, focusing on the five candidates. We then get a series of scene jumps to the homes of Jason, Trini, Zack, Billy, and Kimberly as each of them is suddenly engulfed in teleportation energy, soon arriving together in the Command Center, not knowing their lives were about to be forever changed.
The soon-to-be-Rangers find themselves inexplicably in a strange place, a large chamber filled with technology far beyond anything found on Earth. While Billy is enthralled by the very advanced technology surrounding them, the rest of the teens are staring in shock and fear towards the giant floating head looming over them. When Alpha-6 comes into view, Billy absolutely loses his composure, geeking out hard on the robotic being.
Zordon finally speaks, welcoming the teens, introducing himself and Alpha, and apologizing for their surprise abduction. Billy is still distracted by Alpha's very existence as Zordon explains who he is, why he is on Earth, that the woman everyone saw was that reason, who she was, etc.
During this explanation we get a brief flashback scene in which we see that Rita escaped once before (though Zordon is unaware of how anyone knew her location), freed from her "space dumpster" on the moon by a monstrous female, the evil demon princess Bansheera. They return to Earth together, arriving near the city of Pompeii atop Mount Vesuvius. Zordon and a new team of Rangers (these notably younger than the first Rangers we saw, but not teenagers) teleport in. When they morph, Zordon is in the white MMPR suit while the rest are in suits that look a combination of the MMPR suits and the DaiRanger suits. The Rangers do battle with Rita and Bansheera atop Mount Vesuvius, the Green Ranger seemingly sacrificing herself to stop Rita, becoming trapped with her in her new prison. Bansheera is stopped by a powerful finishing move, however, in doing so it triggers an eruption from the volcano they are fighting on, Bansheera seemingly destroyed by falling in the magma chamber, as the eruption goes on to destroy Pompeii. From a shot of a despairing Zordon we cut to him establishing Rita's new prison on Mars (which we saw when she escaped).
After the flashback we see Zordon explain that he has chosen the five teenagers to be his new rangers. When they ask why them, why not people older and better trained, he explains that their genetics match the needs of the power coins to form a proper bond with the power they channel. Both of his past teams of Rangers suffered over time from the power, as Zordon was not yet aware of the precise genetic needs for a perfect bond, and as the older one got, the more genetic mutations and damage they naturally accrue, the more dangerous the power bond would be. He then goes on to explain that he knows time is short and they haven't had much of it to process what was happening, but he needed a decision.
In response, Zack was the first the agree, then Jason, then Kimberly. After Billy turned it down due to feeling he was inadequate for what was needed, Trini did the same. They both made their apologies and Alpha teleported them out of the Command Center. To the remaining three, Zordon gave them their morphers and power coins, telling them the rules of the game (no personal gain, no escalation, etc), what power they would each wield, that they as they bonded with their power they would instinctively come to use their powers better, and so on.
Zordon then went on to explain that, in all likelihood, Rita's first goal would be to reclaim her palace ship, which currently resided where Zordon had hidden it, deep beneath Angel Grove (hidden long before the city was established), if she could find it.
Ext - Earth's Moon
We see a vast lunar landscape, the camera sweeping across it until it comes to a specific crater, one which now had a large spire at the center of it. The design shows it is clearly a part of Rita's palace-ship from the intro scene.

We see a vast lunar landscape, the camera sweeping across it until it comes to a specific crater, one which now had a large spire at the center of it. The design shows it is clearly a part of Rita's palace-ship from the intro scene.
Int - Rita's Spire
Rita is standing at a large golden telescope which is on one of the spire's balconies, peering through its lens. She mutters to herself that she found them, but Zordon must have gotten to the others already. She shrieks for Squatt and Baboo, asking if they found them. They acknowledged that they had, and each of them runs into the room and put a small figurine on the conveyor belt of a large machine at the back of the room. The belt took the figures and processed them with a techno-alchemical process, from the other side two of Rita's lackey's emerged, Finster and Goldar. Rita advised Goldar that she had need of him, and she told Finster she had infused lunar soil with her own dark magics for him to create foot soldiers for her needs. Finster went to work sculpting as Goldar readied his sword.
Ext - Angel Grove Shopping District
We see Trini and Billy arrive by teleportation beam behind a shopping center. Billy uses his phone to get their location and they begin walking, quietly discussing the unreal situation they had just found themselves in. A few minutes into their walk they happen to run into Tommie and Robbie, where they stop to chat for a few minutes. As they're talking, multiple beams of mystic energy strike the ground around them, resulting in the arrival of Goldar and the Putty Patrol. Goldar roars at the Putties to get the humans, as Rita wanted them before Zordon could get them. The four teens do their best to fight off the Putties, but they are ultimately outclassed and over powered. When the Putties have all four of the youths in their custody, Goldar looks them over and throws Robbie away from them all, claiming Rita said nothing of him. Goldar, the putties, Trini, Billy, and Tommy all disappeared in flash of mystic energy.

Alpha 5, by Isaiah K. Stephens |
Alpha suddenly erupts with a boisterous cry that Rita has captured Trini and Billy, along with another human, as he replays what their monitoring system recorded on the Viewing Globe for Zordon and the gathered rangers. Zordon makes a comment about how he doesn't understand how Rita could possibly know to target Billy and Trini, nor why she wanted the other human, while disregarding his twin. The Rangers identify Tommie and Robbie to Zordon and explain both of them are new in town. Zordon remains confused on the matter, though he decides that it could wait, as Alpha tracked the mystic energy transport beam to the moon, from which he then brought up Rita's spire on the viewing globe. Zordon explained it must have been an escape pod from her Palace Ship, and that is where she brought Billy, Trini, and Tommy. Jason steps up to the task at hand, telling Zordon he was ready to go and rescue them. Zack and Kim agreed. Zordon then explains to the Rangers that even Rita and her minion need to breathe, so they wouldn't have to worry about oxygen on the moon. He also advised them to use extreme caution, as they were about to enter a whole knew world compared to their life up until this point. And as they were teleported to the moon, Zordon left them with the words "May the Power protect you."
Ext - Moon, near Rita's Spire
Jason, Kim, and Zach arrive via teleport on the surface of the moon near Rita's Spire. They are sheathed in a thin layer of energy, barely visible but still present, the color of their respective Power Coins, allowing them to survive without pressure suits or an oxygen supply. They plotted their best approach and a general course of action and were then on the move towards the Spire.
The following sequence sees a multi-prong stealth mission as the three Rangers sneak into the Spire, taking out random Putty Patrol guards. Zack and Kim ultimately cause a distraction for Jason, and end up face to face with Squatt and Baboo, resulting in a comedic fight scene. During this fight, an alert gets sounded and Rita and Goldar leave the Dark Dimension to see what is going on.
Int - Rita's Spire - Prison
We see a part of Rita's palace we have not previously seen, a prison area, slightly out of phase with the rest of reality, a place called the Dark Dimension. The captured teens are being held here. Rita and Goldar arrive, she taunts them with some expository dialogue spoken over flashbacks, we learn how Rita discovered a data storage device detailing the events of history yet to happen (this would be a device fans would have first seen at the end of Power Rangers Dino Charge, a device the final villain launched into the past to change the present just before the Rangers arrived for the final showdown), a device claiming to have been sent by a villain from the future. Rita used this knowledge to her advantage to preempt Zordon's defeat and capture of her. And now the future at large is unknown, even to Rita (though she does still have information on some specific details that wouldn't have changed due to being in place before she received the data device), as she has already changed it forever.
As the flashbacks and expository dialogue end, Rita zaps the youths unconscious and we learn her plan is to corrupt the three and turn them to her side as she summons a group of Putties to strap Trini, Billy, and Tommy to mystical-steampunk-esque looking machinery to twist their minds to her cause.

Int - Rita's Spire
From a well hidden spot, Jason sees Rita and Goldar exiting the Dark Dimension portal. After they pass, he takes a chance and enters the portal. We see Goldar, en route to the disturbance, stop, glance back towards the portal room, sniff the air, and let out a low, menacing growl.
Int - Rita's Spire - Prison
Jason arrives in the Dark Dimension, seeings the trapped teens, and starts trying to get them free. A flash of energy comes from his power coin and we see the Blade Blaster for the first time, as it forms in his hand. He uses the blaster to bust open the cells of all three captured teens, then frees Trini. As Trini comes to, Goldar arrives to stop the escape attempt. Jason and Goldar fight, Jason transforming his weapon between gun and sword as needed to survive the battle. Trini, meanwhile, frees Billy, then, as she moves towards freeing Tommy, is swarmed by Putties. Jason maneuvers to aid them as the three teens fight Goldar and the Putties. Trini and Billy realize they should have accepted Zordon's offer, that despite their misgivings, the world was at stake.
With Jason's morpher and Power Coin as a homing beacon into the Dark Dimension, Billy and Trini's Morpher and Power Coin teleport in, delivering themselves to the youths as their own Blade Blasters appear in their hands. With the new power, the three manage to escape, but are unable to free Tommy.
Int - Rita's Spire
Chaos has broken loose in the Spire, five Rangers, each armed with their Blade Blasters now, defeating Putty after Putty and damaging their surroundings in the process, putting Rita's Spire at risk of destruction. To put a stop to this, Rita sends Goldar and another monster (one very quickly crafted by Finster under the stress of the ongoing battle, to Angel Grove to cause chaos and draw the Rangers away from the Spire. This plan succeeds as the Rangers teleport to Earth to stop Goldar. And with the Rangers gone, Rita begins putting together a powerful spell.

Ext - Downtown Angel Grove
The Rangers arrive via teleport beam to downtown Angel Grove to find Goldar, another monster, and a large group of Putties terrorizing people and destroying property. They rush into action and rather quickly find themselves over powered and vastly out numbered. Finally, the Rangers morph for the first time, we get our first roll call, and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers leap into action. The Putties are quickly dispatched.
The Rangers then turn to Goldar and the monster, and, guided by Zordon and Alpha via communicators in the Rangers' helmets, we see the Power Weapons for the first time. The Rangers and aliens fight a mighty, difficult, battle. Ultimately, the Rangers combine their weapons, unleashing a mighty blast of energy that hits Goldar, weakening to the point of him fleeing. With only the monster left, we see Rita take a break from other spell for just a moment, long enough to make her monster grow.
The Rangers are guided into summoning their Dino Zords for the first time, first fighting them as individual zords, before combining into the megazord mode and doing battle one on one, ultimately destroying the monster.
Int - Rita's Spire
We see Goldar return to the Spire just in time for Rita to cast her big spell, a spell that launches the Spire into orbit around the Earth and cloaks it from detection, allowing her to move forward with her plans undetected.
Int - Command Center
We see the Rangers teleport back in to the Command Center, remove their helmets, and have a conversation with Zordon regarding the future threat that Rita faces, Billy and Trini bringing Zordon up to speed on what they learned about her future knowledge, and so on. They all realize their battle is just beginning as Zordon also recognizes other powers beginning to move and awaken, powers that shouldn't be active, likely now on the move due to the altering of the timeline by Rita taking advantage of the future knowledge she obtained.
Int - Angel Grove High
The Rangers, minus Billy, unmorphed and back at school, are eating lunch on the green. It has been a few days since their raid on Rita's Spire and the monster battle. Jason is still both angry and disappointed in himself for being unable to free Tommy. Robby, Tommy's twin brother, hasn't been to school since his brother disappeared. Billy walks up, giving each of the Rangers a wrist communicator he built in conjunction with Alpha, to keep everyone in touch with Zordon and the android. And as they snap them on, we hear the classic MMPR communicator sound. Jason anwsers, Zordon tells them of another monster attack on the city. The Rangers jump up, find a place to hide, and teleport.
Ext - Angel Grove Warehouse District
The Rangers teleport in, see the monster and Putties raiding a warehouse. The Rangers morph, draw their power weapons, leap into action towards the camera, and we cut to black, credits roll.

Ext - Angel Grove Park
We see Robby walking a hiking trail through the park, depressed and upset over his missing brother. He hears something in the bushes and trees near him. He investigates, finds his brother Tommy lying on the ground, dirty, and groaning. He checks on Tommy, looks around, calls for help, then finally pulls out his phone to call 911. As Robby is looking away, on the phone and looking for help, we see Tommy's eyes flash green, and we cut to black.
END.

And there it is, the finale for the MMPR movie in a way I'd like to see it take place. Hopefully you'll agree, it is something that both respects what came before, but still new enough to be worth doing. And this leaves the Power Ranger Universe open to a new continuity, one in which stricter continuity controls can be put into place without invalidating what came before, by opening up a new timeline that springs out of the events of the previous 20+ years of the TV series.
This was written on the assumption that we would at least get a trilogy of movies out of this reboot, and these movies would also take place in the same continuity as, and at the same time as, the TV series. Multiple teams of Rangers would exist on Earth at one time.
Given this is a new timeline, one altered by Rita, we would be able to revisit past characters and villains, and not have to worry about previous continuity, because despite a sense of familiarity, everything is different now. As such, the use of Bansheera in this story is set up to have her be the main villain in the adaptation of Ninninger, which would premiere after the release of the movie (as Saban is likely going to adapt Ninninger next, not ToQger). While a US original suit would likely be needed for Bansheera herself, I feel the monsters in Ninninger would make great demons to tell Bansheera's story in this new timeline.
Shuriken Sentai Ninninger's Kibaoni Army Corp |
So, with all that said, I'd like to hear what you think about both the movie idea and the nature of the franchise going forward with it.
